How can gratitude to God be a sort of
sacrifice? We tend to think of sacrifices as things we give up, forego, or do
without. The sacrifice of praise to the Holy One means giving the glory up to
God, now and forever.
“But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay.
Salvation belongs to the Lord!” (Jonah 2:9, ESV)
Praising God in thanksgiving is the debt we
owe Him for who He is and what He has done. At the same time, it doesn’t feel
like a payment at all. A sacrifice is an offering, and it doesn't always have to be painful. Sure, it can go against our own comfort, especially when things aren't going the way we expect or like. When we honor God anyway, we offer a sacrifice of praise.
Giving praise to the Lord brings us joy at the same time. And giving it up to God is anything but giving up.
