I’m not much of a
rugged outdoorsman. In fact, my idea of camping involves bug-proof screened
windows and indoor plumbing. But, as a teenager, I did experience a few
wilderness trips that tested my mettle.
On one expedition,
a group of us hiked a rocky mountain trail. We carried our essentials in backpacks, with our sleeping bags rolled up and tied underneath. We clomped through
the Rocky Mountain terrain in clunky hiking boots in the scorching August sun. The
scenery was gorgeous, but the air was thin.
Some of us grew
weary within the first hour or two. We begged our guide to let us stop and
rest, but this seasoned sojourner urged us on.
We finally made it
to the appointed campsite, where we splashed in the clearest, coldest water we’d
ever seen.
It was
worth the trip.
Along the way,
though, we learned about burdens. Those backpacks were heavy on the way up the
hill. At one point, I am certain my shoulders began to tremble.
They were
considerably lighter on the homeward trek, as we traversed down the mountain.
God knows all about
burdens. He offers to be our Burden Bearer, helping us to complete our daily
and life-long journeys with supernatural strength. Often, He brings fellow
travelers along to help us carry the loads for a while.
What’s more, He
provides sweet resting spots along the way, if we will stop and look for His
signs.
Today’s
Bible promise points the way.
Cast your burden upon the
Lord
and He will sustain you.
He will never allow the
righteous
to be shaken.
(Psalm 55:22, NASB)
Burdens are heavy
loads. We will likely always have them in this life. But what a lift it is to
know that we need not carry them all by ourselves.
