Confident – God's character from A to Z

Human confidence can be a shaky thing. We second-guess ourselves when life surprises us, when circumstances set us back, when others try to demean us, or when we simply run out of steam. Sometimes we are surprised to see the most prideful people displaying the most profound scarcities of confidence.

It’s often linked to assurance, assertiveness, cool-headedness, imperturbability, level-headedness, poise, spunk, or a can-do attitude. However you define it, confidence can be tricky.

Not so with God.

God is confident.

“He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.'”(Psalm 46:10, NIV)

Look again.

He doesn’t say, “I might be exalted.” He says, “I will be exalted” (emphases added). There’s no question, no doubt, and no conditionality about it.

It’s not like God won’t be extolled, glorified, honored, and praised, if we don’t do it all right. It’s not like something could go terribly wrong to jeopardize God’s holy reputation and diminish His exaltedness. God’s confidence does not depend on us. Not at all.

It’s a given.

God is confident of it, because He is God. And because He is the Almighty One, and His confidence does not waver, we can have confidence in Him. He will not be shaken, so we need not be, either (see Psalm 16:8).

  1. Good point!
I never would have thought of that quality in God, but of course!
