Imaginative – God's character from A to Z

The Author of Life is imaginative and ingenious and innovative and inventive. Call it intelligent design, if you wish. We could discuss how He created the universe. We could debate whether the process took seven 24-hour days or seven eras.

Maybe that’s sort of a moot point in the 21st Century. Perhaps the main issue is that God did it – intentionally and not by accident. Everything didn’t simply arise by some random interruption that tossed chaos into creation.

Just look around and the works of His hands. From the cellular level to the immeasurable stretches of space, nothing man could ever devise or develop could compare to the intelligence or design of the Almighty.

“For in Him all things were created: things in Heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him.” (Colossians 1:16, NIV)

Inspiring indeed! Who but God could think all that up?

Helpful – God's character from A to Z

Hi – de – ho – de – hum! What a hairy week this has been. Honestly, I am feeling a little hard-boiled right about now. And I have a horrific headache. Maybe you know the feeling.

But God is still holy. He is higher than all the hassles, heartaches, and horrors that life can hurl at us. He has us in His hands.

God is helpful.

“Surely God is my help; the Lord is the One who sustains me.” (Psalm 54:4, NIV)

Hang on to Jehovah! He is our help. We can find our hope in Him. And it’s a hope that holds.

Gracious – God's character from A to Z

Our glorious God cares greatly for us. He hears our cries and answers with generosity, gentleness, and goodwill. We may not always get the answers we want, but He always gives the answers that are best.

“People of Zion, who live in Jerusalem, you will weep not more. How gracious He will be when you cry for help! As soon as He hears, He will answer you.” (Isaiah 30:19, NIV)

 God is gracious.

Let’s unpack that idea for a moment. What is graciousness?

When we describe a person as gracious, we usually mean he or she is agreeable, charming, courteous, elegant, friendly, hospitable, kind-spirited, noble, obliging, pleasing, popular, tactful, and well-mannered.

But the word “gracious” is actually derived from the Latin word “gratia,” which pertains to grace. It’s about benevolence and mercy and compassion and forgiveness and favor.

I think sometimes we confuse gracefulness with graciousness. A ballerina is graceful. A gazelle is graceful. A swimming swan is graceful. God is gracious. Big difference!

God is the One who redeemed us from our sins, our selfishness, and ourselves by sacrificing His own Son in our place. He is the One who calls us to place our burdens, our doubts, our fears, or failings, and or worries in His hands. He is the One who picks us up, again and again, and sets us back on our feet to follow Him.

Thanks be to our most gracious God.
