Each November, as
Thanksgiving approaches, people tend to focus on gratitude perhaps more than at
any other time of year. Bunches of bloggers and scores of social networkers
post daily entries of thankfulness throughout the month. How refreshing it can
be to see such positive messages popping up.
God
is Jehovah Jireh (YHVH Yireh), the Lord Who Provides (see Genesis 22:14). His
love never changes, and all good things come from His hand.
Still, how often we forget to thank Him for His provision.
My
grandparents were very generous people. Each birthday and Christmas, they gave
their grandchildren pretty greeting cards containing money, which we were free
to use or save. My parents taught us to write thank-you notes for these and
other gifts. One year, one of my brothers forgot to do this after his birthday.
Without
a word and with no antipathy, my grandparents let the months go by until
Christmas. Then, when the cards came out, we discovered the pile was short one
card. That brother didn’t get one.
Pretty
sure it was a long while before he forgot his thank you’s again.
I’m
not certain that God teaches lessons the same way. But the point stuck.
Appreciation matters. And the Lord who provides delights in the praises and
adoration and thanks from His children.
How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light. (Psalm 36:7-9, NIV)
Wonderful One, we confess that we never thank you enough. In fact, it
would be impossible to number all of the blessings You have given to us. If
salvation itself were Your only gift to us, it would be far more than enough.
We are grateful for the life and the provision You grant us each day. We are thankful for Your protection. We look forward to the amazing abundant life to come in Your Kingdom. Direct our eyes to focus on You with appreciation and honor.
Please call our children to do the same. We ask in faith and in the name of our wonderful Lord, Your Son Jesus Christ.
