Draw me with love

Several years ago, our family attended a milestone birthday party for a dear friend. At this shindig, an artist was drawing caricatures of the guests.

When my turn came, I was shocked at the sketch he made of me. My facial features were exaggerated, making me look ghoulish. I hated it!

How I wished the sketcher had drawn me with love.

But the artist drew what he saw, perhaps influenced by his own perception of life and people in general.

God, the Artist of all Art, draws us with love and kindness and mercy and grace. He formed us with that attitude, and he draws us close to His own heart that way. It’s not about our own value, but the values of God’s own character.

Thanks be to God that He is love and kindness and mercy and grace … and that He never changes.

Bible study cracks me up

Seriously, my small group is hilarious. OK, we have our share of meaty Bible study lessons, deep discussions, and intense personal sharing.

But these ladies are fabulously funny. The group includes a charismatic Catholic, an Evangelical, a couple of Methodists, a pair of Pentecostals, and a Presbyterian. We cover all sorts of topics with bluntness and honesty, baring our souls each week and respecting one another’s unique perspective.

These sweet friends are all sincerely spiritual, but they are also side-splittingly and riotously entertaining.

It’s invigorating!

And invariably, someone will burst out laughing and set us all to chuckling and chortling until somebody snorts. Then it gets worse, but in such a mirthful way.

We call it “The Anoinking.” And we are abundantly blessed.

A couple of weeks ago, we had a lesson on sadness. By the end of the morning, we were all crying – with laughter. Clearly, we had all been released from whatever stuff our souls had carried into the meeting.

God is good. And I am pretty convinced He has a particularly good time on Thursday mornings.

He will yet fill your mouth with laughter
and your lips with shouts of joy.
(Job 8:21, NIV)
