From Peanuts

By Charles Schultz

What's the secret to giving and receiving good advice? Certainly, advice can be affectionately given or critically cast upon us.

How do we receive advice? Do we tend to welcome constructive criticism and instruction, or do we reject it? Doesn’t our acceptance of advice often depend upon the spirit in which it is given?

The book of Proverbs is filled with words about advice and words of advice. Today’s Scripture readings, in particular, include several familiar Bible verses. Perhaps you have already memorized some of these gems.

How well can you fill in the blanks for these Proverbs of advice?

“Instruct a __________ man and he will be wiser still;

teach a righteous man and he will add to his __________.”

(Proverbs 9:9, NIV)

The way of a __________ seems right to him,

but a wise man listens to advice.”

(Proverbs 12:15, NIV)

“Do not speak to a fool,

for he will __________ the wisdom of your words.”

but many advisers make __________ sure.”

“Plans fail for lack of __________,

but with many advisers they succeed.”

And do not resent His rebuke,

Because the Lord disciplines those He __________,

As a father the son he delights in.”

Will you pray with me?

Almighty God,

You are the all-wise Advisor of our souls.

Teach us to trust You,

And lead us to listen.

Open our hearts and our ears,

So that we might hear

What You wish to tell us

Through Your Word

And those You have chosen

To carry it.

Amen.
