Today’s nativity image pick comes from the 16th century Peruvian Cuzco School of artistic tradition (Escuela Cuzquena). Artists from this genre were generally Jesuit. Most were of Italian or Spanish descent. All of these ancestral threads may be seen in the apparel of those pictured, as well as the flavor of the scene.
“Gloria, in excelsis Deo,” reads the angelic banner over the infant Christ.
Nativity, Cuzco School, c1535
