Loving – God's character from A to Z

God welcomes us as His children and looks at each of us lovingly.  He is always adoring, affectionate, ardent, attentive, caring, concerned, considerate, enamored, faithful, fervent, impassioned, intensely interested, passionate, precious, steadfast, strong, tender, thoughtful, true, vehement, and zealous.

He is also wholly committed to remaining faithfully so forever. His love cannot and will not ever change.

We may reject Him, choosing judgment instead of the love He offers. We may opt to go it alone, wherever that leads. We may find ourselves distanced from God.

If that happens, God is not the one who stepped away. He would like nothing more than to draw us back.

God is loving.

“How precious is Your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.” (Psalm 36:7, NIV)

What does it mean to have refuge in the shadow of God’s wings? Think of a mother bird, protecting her young by hiding them under her soft feathered wing.  She may be guarding them from predators or simply shielding them from harsh winds and weather. It’s a safe place.

That’s how God loves us.

I believe we cannot even imagine the countless times and the many ways He protects us from dangers and hazards and perils and threats of which we are completely unaware.

Maybe sometimes the shelter of His wings feels a little sweltering to us. Our own feathers are ruffled, because we want to fly or swim or flit about on our own. We think we’re ready to own the sky.

But God’s love for us is fierce and devoted and always for our good. Maybe someday we’ll see and understand what He daily demonstrates.
