3. Staged in Heaven – The Birth of Christ

This Italian Renaissance painting of the holy nativity looks to me somewhat like an ornately staged scene, with angels overhead and all the other key players caught mid-action below.

The moment captured here presents the pivotal point in all of history, when the divine entered the mortal.

Maybe this scene presents an apt reminder of the Lord’s hand in all of human history.

Events unfold around us, and we may sometimes assume things occur randomly, but not if we hold onto faith that God is still and always will be the Almighty Sovereign of the universe He created.

Unique – God's character from A to Z

God stands alone. He is unique, one of a kind, and unlike all others. Surely we know that, but do we really grasp it?

Folks like to say everyone is different. No two people are alike. (That’s why they’re called “individuals.”) If you want to look closer at your own uniqueness, turn your Bible to Psalm 139. Then look in the mirror. You are unique. 

But God is even more so. He invented the concept of uniqueness. The Almighty Maker is sui generis, without match, the one and only, and in a class by Himself. That doesn’t begin to describe our great God. How can we not worship Him?

“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever Amen.” (1 Timothy 1:17, NIV)

This familiar Scripture is often recited, either pastorally or congregationally, as a benediction to close worship services. Many of us can state it from memory, perhaps because of this long-time repetition.

Let’s skip past the familiarity of the passage for a moment, digging deeper than rote reading. This single sentence from Scripture simply overflows with doctrine of the Divine.

Chew on those words a bit:  God is eternal. He is immortal. He is invisible. He is the only God. He deserves all honor and glory for always and forever.

Surely no one is like our God.

Imaginative – God's character from A to Z

The Author of Life is imaginative and ingenious and innovative and inventive. Call it intelligent design, if you wish. We could discuss how He created the universe. We could debate whether the process took seven 24-hour days or seven eras. 

Maybe that’s sort of a moot point in the 21^st Century. Perhaps the main issue is that God did it – intentionally and not by accident. Everything didn’t simply arise by some random interruption that tossed chaos into creation.

Just look around and the works of His hands. From the cellular level to the immeasurable stretches of space, nothing man could ever devise or develop could compare to the intelligence or design of the Almighty.

“For in Him all things were created: things in Heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him.” (Colossians 1:16, NIV)

Inspiring indeed! Who but God could think all that up?
