Worthy Worship

(Amos 5 – 9)

The Call of Amos

16th Century

What is the nature of genuine praise? What constitutes worthy worship of the Lord, who deserves all glory and honor?

In today’s Bible readings, we find how the Old Testament minor prophet Amos railed against the people of Judah and Israel for praising God with their mouths, while denying the needs of the poor. Amos prophesied several plagues that would demonstrate the judgment of the Lord against injustice and inequities among His people.

Amos spoke the word of the Lord, admonishing the people to true and worthy worship of the great Jehovah.

“This is what the Lord says to the house of Israel:
‘Seek Me and live.’”

(Amos 5:4, NIV)

Seek the Lord and live.”

(Amos 5:6a, NIV)

“Seek good, not evil,
that you may live.
Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you,
just as you say He is.

Hate evil, love good;
maintain justice in the courts.
Perhaps the Lord God Almighty will have mercy
on the remnant of Joseph.”

(Amos 5:14-15, NIV)

When we seek to worship the Lord, what or whom do we truly seek? Do we look for loving fellowship, marvelous music or entertaining preaching? Are we eager for a healing or another miracle? For what do we search, when we come before the Lord?

Amos held the key to worthy worship: seeking the Lord Himself. And our great God promises to be found by all who will truly seek Him. What a treasure.

Will you pray with me?

Great and glorious God,

We earnestly desire to honor You

With the praise and worship You desire.

Help us to see that it is all about You,

And that You deserve all the glory.

You have already saved us,

Purchasing us from our own guilt.

We belong to You.

May we bow before You,

Prostate, yet passionate,

For we love You above all.

Amen.
