Lingering line by line on the Lord’s Prayer

Let’s take a lovely long look at the Lord’s own prayer. These familiar lines hold volumes of truth and meaning, although we may be tempted to recite them somewhat blankly for their familiarity.

Jesus’ followers, during his First Century ministry on earth, asked Him how to pray. And He offered this model, which still guides believers to pray biblically.

Within these oft-spoken lines, we can find a wonderfully complete pattern for balanced prayer.

Take a look:

After this manner therefore pray ye:

Our Father which art in Heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done
In earth
As it is in Heaven.
Give us this day
Our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts
As we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not in to temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom
And the power
And the glory
Forever.
Amen.

In a series of upcoming posts, Heart of a Ready Writer will linger on these lines, looking at related Bible verses and reflecting on the Lord’s model for prayer.

Will you come along and pray Scripture with us?

Fanfare for fine fathers on Dad’s Day

Fine fathers deserve fanfare, and Father’s Day serves as an annual reminder.

Still, sometimes I find Father’s Day a bit frustrating and ironic.

Maybe it’s because genuinely great dads merit honor all year round – not just on the third Sunday in June.

Perhaps it’s because the celebration of Father’s Day seems to imply all fathers do. Possibly, it’s because folks seem to trumpet the apparent perfection of their paternal figures on this day – as if every dad were Superman or the paragon of parenthood.

Clearly, that’s not always the case.

I am blessed to have a loving, loyal, virtuous father. My dad is a man of integrity and honor. I have never questioned his character, and respect for him has always come easily. He deserves it.

The righteous who walks in his integrity –
blessed are his children after him.
(Proverbs 20:7, ESV)

Happy Father’s Day!

Zest

Zero compares to the One who merits our zealous and zestful adoration.

You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.
(Isaiah 55:12, NIV)

Youth

Young and old yearn for YHWH (Yahweh), the living God and Ancient of Days. He reigns – yesterday, today, and forever.

Yes and Amen.

For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth.
(Psalm 71:5, NIV)

X stands for Christ

Why is “X” often used to represent the word “Christ”?

It started in Greek. The Greek letter “Xi” (pronounced as “chi”), which looks like our “X,” is often used as an abbreviation for Christ.

We may write “X-mas” on our December calendars, or we may jot the word “Xian” in a note. But we read these shortcuts aloud as “Christmas” and “Christian.”

In the Greek, the word “Christos” (which means Christ) begins with this letter.

The letter “X” also looks like a cross.

And, used as a Roman numeral, “X” means 10, which is often seen as a standard of perfection, perhaps pointing to the sinless Savior as well.

Abbreviated or spelled out, it’s all about Jesus Christ, the crux of our faith and life. So, when X is used with proper intent, no disrespect is meant.

When people urge Christians to “Put Christ back into Christmas,” it’s a heart issue – not a matter of spelling. It’s a question of claiming the Christ as Lord and Savior and wearing His name proudly.

For He is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, and the Author and Finisher of our faith.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
(Romans 10:9, NIV)
