A to Z Answers: Afraid or Awed?

Sometimes we find ourselves frozen by fear or daunted by distress. In those moments, to what Scriptures can we turn for comfort?

Our awesome God trumps all our fears.

We love to sing about how awesome our God is. Frankly, we tend to tag nearly anything we like as “awesome,” making this nearly a throw-away term.

What does awesome really mean?

Here are 30 synonyms for “awesome.” Not all of these words match the meaning exactly, but perhaps these will give us pause for thought.

  1. alarming
  2. amazing
  3. astonishing
  4. awful
  5. beautiful
  6. breathtaking
  7. capital
  8. daunting
  9. exalted
  10. excellent
  11. extraordinary
  12. fantastic
  13. fearful
  14. fearsome
  15. formidable
  16. grand
  17. imposing
  18. impressive
  19. magnificent
  20. majestic
  21. mind-blowing
  22. moving
  23. overwhelming
  24. striking
  25. stunning
  26. stupefying
  27. uncanny
  28. unmatched
  29. wonderful
  30. wondrous

Essentially, “awesome” means “awe-inspiring.” It’s that stop-you-in-your-tracks and take-your-breath-away feeling.

When we consider the character of God, that description fits Him like no other. And, if we really do carry a sense of awe before God, then perhaps fear will finally flee. Oh, how I need such a reminder often, when I try to look for courage on my own!
Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart. Wait, I say, on the Lord.
(Psalm 27:14, KJV)

The Lord is my Light and my Salvation -- whom shall I fear or dread? The Lord is the Refuge and Stronghold of my life--of whom shall I be afraid?
(Psalm 27:1, KJV)

  3. I think you're right about us being in "awe" rather than being "afraid." Awesome is the perfect word to describe the Lord. Very interesting and fun post. I like all the synonyms. :)
