Simply Santa and the Savior

Simply Santa and the Savior

How do you think Santa Claus might feel about Jesus?

Personally, I think he would fall to his knees and worship the newborn King of Kings. According to Christmas lore, the original St. Nicholas (also known as Sinterklaas, Kris Kringle, Pere Noel, Father Christmas and many other holiday monikers) was a man of faith.

I’d be willing to wager that Mrs. Claus would never dream of sending Santa out for his global toy delivery trip on Christmas Eve without praying God’s traveling mercies over him. NORAD may be tracking the journey, but you can bet the holiday pair put their trust in Jehovah the Protector.

They might even hold a North Pole prayer meeting with all the elves before hitching up the reindeer and taking flight for the night.

Anyone who’s that good at giving surely must have had a glimpse of heavenly love.

Every knee shall bow before Bethlehem’s Babe.

Let’s take a moment and step back from all the trimmings and trivializing. What’s Christmas really about?

Sometimes the simplest of images can bring us back to a proper perspective. The idea of Santa kneeling before the Savior has set me to thinking about my own attitude, particularly during this rushed-to-frenzy time of year.

Oh, come. Let us adore Him! Draw my focus, Lord, from my to-do list to the One for whom I live.

“Think of yourselves
the way Christ Jesus thought of himself.
He had equal status with God
but didn't think so much of himself
that he had to cling
to the advantages of that status
no matter what.
Not at all.
When the time came,
he set aside
the privileges of deity
and took on the status of a slave,
became human!
Having become human,
he stayed human.
It was an incredibly humbling process.
He didn't claim special privileges.
Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life
and then died a selfless, obedient death —
and the worst kind of death at that —a crucifixion.
Because of that obedience,
God lifted him high
and honored him
far beyond anyone or anything,
ever,
so that all created beings
in heaven and on earth —
even those long ago dead and buried —
will bow in worship
before this Jesus Christ,
and call out in praise
that he is the Master of all,
to the glorious honor of God the Father.”
(Philippians 2:5-11, The Message)

  1. Yes! I have long appreciated the image of Santa worshiping the Christ child! That IS what he would do.
